Brief Description of the Course:

(NB. All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 5 or 10 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification)

This is a BTEC Introductory course that is designed to give you a broad understanding of horticulture. It provides a balance of both practical and theoretical instruction and is an ideal preparation for those learners who wish to progress onto our more advanced level 3 diploma courses or for those who wish to enter the industry at craft level.

Areas covered include, Plant Science, Planting and Garden Maintenance, Plant Production and Horticultural Machinery. An important element on this course will be a period of work experience wherever possible within an industrial placement.

Liverpool - Students support the maintenance of the Victorian Walled Garden in Croxteth Park.

Entry Criteria:

This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following qualifications are needed:

¨ a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade D or above to include English Language

¨ or equivalent qualifications.

  • Construct Landscape Foundations and Surfaces

  • Establish and Maintain Plants Outdoors

  • Introduction to Land-based Machinery Operations (Preston)

  • Maintain Winter and Summer Sports Turf Surfaces (Preston)

  • Contribute to Establishing and Maintaining Amenity Turf (Liverpool)

  • Participate in Propagation Techniques (Liverpool)

  • Setting out from a Plan

  • Understand the Basic Principles of Plant Science

  • Undertake Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments and practical work. There are no formal examinations on the Level 2 Diploma.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Working in the Amenity horticultural sector such as parks, heritage gardens etc.

Working in the landscape maintenance and construction sector

Working in plant production nurseries and garden centres

Progression:

The vast majority of students usually progress onto the Level 3 BTEC Diploma courses if they gain sufficient merits on the Level 2 Diploma.

Industrial / Work Experience:

For the industrial Experience module, learners will be expected to seek a one day per week unpaid, placement within their chosen sector during terms two and three. This placement must be approved by the college in advance and your progress will be monitored by visits from your tutor. Work placements often lead to an offer of part or full time employment for those learners who perform well on this module

Special Requirements:

Sensible outdoor clothing is expected for practical work. Steel toe-cap boots/wellingtons are essential and overalls are recommended for practicals. Students should also have suitable waterproof clothing for wet weather.
