City Lit Opera provides training for singers interested in applying to conservatoires or entering the profession. Participants draw on a range of backgrounds and experiences: recent graduates; singers who wish to return to performing after a career break and those who simply love singing opera. The course involves vocal production sessions, stage-craft, language coaching and production sessions leading to staged workshop performances of scenes at the end of term.NB Entry is by audition, not interview. - Perform to a high enough standard, both as a singer and actor, to take part in the final presentation- Show a better understanding of the operatic repertoire and its suitability.- Demonstrate a greater understanding of style in varied repertoire. Show that you understand what it means to have to work as part of an ensemble group.- Show an independent capacity to make interpretative decisions by placing the excerpts in a stylistic context.
You will need to acquire copies of music to be studied during the term. The tutors will assist in finding appropriate editions. Music may be purchased new or second-hand and/or available from local libraries:Westminster Central Music Library (Victoria) [external website]Barbican Music Library [external website]Petrucci Music library (IMSLP) [external website].
Practical group work, pair work, individual performances, tutor demonstration, constructive criticism and discussion. The course will include musical and interpretive coaching and stagecraft.You will also be expected to prepare and learn music independently (daily practice is essential) and to perform in staged workshops.

- Production of an evening of substantial opera scenes/acts
- Working in a professional manner by this stage with a fast pace of blocking and character development. Musical responses will also be expected to be swift and efficient, with professional approaches to music calls and with music thoroughly prepared
- As in module 2, we take textual work as the starting point. Singers will be expected to be able to move around the stage in as natural a manner as possible, reflecting their understanding of text. Likewise, facial and other physical responses will be expected to be a natural and fully cognisant response to the text.
The final term (module) aims to give a near experience of preparing a full length work in a professional company.

You may wish to repeat this course or progress to more specialised operatic training or seek roles in opera companies. Your tutors will be able to advise and you are welcome to contact the music department office to discuss other City Lit courses.
