Civil engineers plan, design, construct and maintain the infrastructure or ‘built’ environment, including buildings, airports, railways, roads, tunnels, bridges and dams.
Benefitting from teaching founded on cutting-edge research, you’ll learn extensive theory and practical skills. Regular individual and group projects tackle industrial challenges such as the design, building and testing of roof structures, development of a robotic construction scheme or helping Severn Trent improve reservoir design. You will also enjoy fieldwork which has previously included geotechnical engineering work in Wales or the Isle of Wight.

Visits to construction sites and lectures from experts in industry provide insights into the latest civil engineering practices. You will take a cross-discipline approach to solving engineering problems and hone your project management, communication and leadership skills. All this will give you confidence to implement new technologies and optimise existing ones, equipping you for work across many industrial sectors.

About this course

In your first year, and into your second year, you will build a solid foundation of understanding in core areas before you explore more specialist areas later in the course. You will undertake civil design projects in each year and in your second year optional modules will be available such as Technology in International Development and A Modern Foreign Language. In your third year, you will study a range of in-depth topics such as structural analysis, water engineering and geotechnics. You will also undertake individual and/or group project work.

Our graduates have gone on to work for organisations including: Jaguar Land Rover, Barclays Bank, NHS Institute for Innovation, Aston Martin, Deutsche Bank.

Examples of our graduates’ job roles include: Business Systems Analyst, Graduate Civil Engineer, Aerodynamacist, Structural Engineer, Technology trader.

A level: A*AA to include A level Mathematics and Physics.

You must also achieve a pass in the science practical if your science A level includes a separate practical assessment.

Course programme

Initially, all students follow the same programme covering topics which we believe are important for all engineers to understand. By the second term of Year Two you are able to specialise in Civil or switch to one of the other Engineering courses (such as: Automotive, Biomedical Systems, Electronic, Electrical and Electronic, Engineering Business Management, Mechanical, Manufacturing and Mechanical, or, Systems).

There are nine core modules in the first year which are currently:
  • Dynamics and Thermodynamics
  • Electrical and Electronic Circuits
  • Engineering Design
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Introduction to Engineering Business Management
  • Introduction to Engineering: Professionalism and Practice
  • Materials for Engineering
  • Statics and Structures
  • Systems Modelling, Simulation and Computing
You are also free to take A Modern Foreign Language module as an optional extra.
In the second year there are seven core modules which are currently:
  • Civil Engineering Design 1
  • Civil Engineering Materials and Structural Analysis
  • Dynamics and Fluid Mechanics
  • Electromechanical System Design
  • Engineering Mathematics and Technical Computing
  • Technical Operations Management
  • Forensic Engineering
Optional modules currently include:
  • Computer Architecture and Systems
  • Introduction to Secondary School Teaching (Physics)
  • A Modern Foreign Language
  • Multimedia Technology and Signal Propagation
  • Starting a Business
  • Systems Engineering Principles
  • Technology in International Development
In the third year the students undertake a group design project with integrated construction management in practice. The final year of the Civil Engineering route offers core modules which will cover a wide range of topics. Currently the following modules are included:
  • Civil Engineering Design 2
  • Concrete Structures
  • Design Project with Construction Management (BEng only)
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Individual Project (MEng only)
