About this course

180 UCAS points including at least one A2-level (or equivalent) in a health and social care or community related subject.

You should also have five GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent) in any subjects.

Special consideration will be given to applicants without the above qualifications who have relevant work/life experience.

Applicants who have completed our FdA Health & Social Care will be considered for entry to Level 2 or 3 of this course.

About the course

You will be taught through a mix of lectures, student-led seminars, small group work, role-play, simulation exercises, community visits, project work and tutorials. Assessment will be based primarily on written work – in the form of assignments, essays and a dissertation in your final year.

You will have the opportunity to study some optional modules which will enable you to focus on particular areas that may be of personal interest or which will support your career plans following graduation.

Our staff have considerable professional experience and academic strengths relevant to community-based work to promote health and wellbeing as well as community-based research into these areas. We also have strong links with the health service, local authorities, community groups, and with the leisure industry.

What you will learn

You will learn a combination of academic knowledge and practical skills in order to participate in and manage community health programmes in a variety of contexts.

You will study the various determinants of health such as social, biological, psychological and environmental. Work-based learning and the study of principles and practice in health and wellbeing initiatives will support your understanding of the implementation and management of community-based health programmes

You will develop a portfolio to relate your learning to the development of Competencies for Public Health.

  • The course includes work-based learning at Levels 2 and 3.
  • Within work-based learning you will learn about health needs in the community. You will also learn how to access, understand and analyse data and about agencies, roles and competencies. You will manage the planning and design of an evaluation strategy, complete a work-based dissertation and develop a portfolio of evidence of Competencies for Public Health Practice.

Careers and professional development

The course is designed to meet the requirements of employers in sectors including local authorities, the NHS, leisure industries and community-based voluntary sector organisations that focus on health promotion and health improvement. It will prepare you to work in a collaborative manner with other workers and agencies and to participate in and manage community health programmes such as smoking cessation, community food projects, and community development. The course is designed to help graduates link their skills to the current policy agenda of ‘Choosing Health' as part of the Public Health workforce.
