What are the entry requirements?
Some experience of using a computer is essential. If you aren't a confident computer user you are advised to join an additional course, such as CLAIT. Some previous knowledge of elementary electronics is helpful, but not essential. Listening and reading skills are needed when studying the theory of PCs and networks. Report writing skills are needed when completing the assignments. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills at interview.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 1

  • Reading: You can read and understand the main points and ideas in different types of writing - for example magazine articles, newspaper stories or short stories. You can understand main ideas from a report, read from a website or college text book, etc. You can use what you have read to help you write an essay or make decisions. Writing: You can present information in different ways. You can use grammar, spelling and punctuation correctly. You can present your thoughts and ideas in a clear way that people can understand.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 1

  • Interpret Information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; read scales on familiar measuring equipment using everyday units; make accurate observations; identify suitable calculations to get the results you need for your task. Carry out calculations: You can add and subtract, with whole numbers and simple decimals, with or without a calculator; work to the level of accuracy you have been told to use; multiply and divide a simple decimal by a whole number with or without a calculator; understand and calculate simple fractions and percentages; work out the area and volum of rectangular-based shapes; use scale on diagrams; use ratio and proportion; find the average or mean of up to 10 items; find the range for up to 10 items.

Where can it lead?
The A+ certificate is accepted by industry experts as the standard in foundation level vendor-neutral certification for service technicians. It is possible to progress towards a level 3 Diploma, Cisco CCNA, and/or Microsoft MCP. With further training it should be possible to apply for computer technician posts in companies, schools etc

What will I study?
Computer Maintenance and Installation (A+). It is designed to allow students to demonstrate understanding of the processes involved in installing, configuring and upgrading computer systems and Networks. You will learn to be aware of the health and safety issues surrounding the maintenance and installation of computer systems

How will I be taught?
Practical work makes up the main part of the course. Some parts involve setting up individual PCs and networks. Other areas focus on troubleshooting and repairing them.

How will I be assessed?
This course is focuses on the practicals involved with A+. You can enroll on the A+ Exams preparation which includes the 2 online exams.

What support is available while I am on the course?
Support is offered through the workshop which will back up the theory work each week and will prepare you for the assessments.
