What do I need to get on the course? Students must normally have passed the final dispensing theory and practical examinations of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO).
What will I study? The course prepares you for the theoretical examinations in anatomy, visual optics, contact lens practice and the practical examinations with laboratory periods in instrumentation and contact lens fitting. You must have already passed the FBDO exams and be employed in contact lens practice. Optional second year cost ú750 (including examination fees).
What qualification will I get? At the end of the first year students will attempt the theory papers of the Certificate Examination and, if they have sufficient contact lens experience in practice, may attempt the ABDO certificate practical examination. At the end of the second year students can take the ABDO's Diploma in Contact Lens Dispensing. Successful students will be able to use the suffix FBDO.CL.
What can I do after the course? This course is designed for those qualified dispensing opticians who wish to begin fitting contact lenses and obtain the required qualifications to practise in this field. A further practical course is offered to enable the students to take the honours practical examination and, if successful, to use the suffix FBDO (Hons) CL.
