About this course
Five GCSEs at grades A-C to include maths and English at grade C or above. In addition to general college requirements students will be expected to achieve a minimum of grade C in a GCSE Art and Design based subject or a Merit in BTEC 1st Certificate Art and Design. At your interview evidence will be required of recent art and design work in the form of a portfolio or sketchbooks.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is primarily through observation and presentation of practical creative projects, supported by written coursework, group critique and individual tutorial. Students are encouraged to assess themselves enthusiastically and honestly, and to critique their practical projects positively. Learners will be assessed on their ability to research the contexts of their work; record, analyse and review their own development and contribution to projects; plan and prepare public exhibition of work; work to briefs and target audiences; investigate and research creative practitioners and demonstrate a clear understanding of how disciplines, skills and teams work together to produce work in the creative industry. Assessment is through personal response to an external paper based on practical work. Access to personal record sand notes is allowed. Functional Skills will also be tested in English, Maths and ICT at Level 2.
What can I do afterwards?
The course offers a choice of progression routes, including the possibility of enrolling onto a one year Art and Design Foundation in preparation for Degree/HND/Foundation Degree courses. The one year intensive Foundation courses on offer include: EVOC, City College, London College of Fashion and Central St. Martins. However it is possible to secure direct entry onto University, with students being accepted onto a wide range of Higher Education courses, including Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography, Fashion and Textile Design.
Are there any additional costs involved?
It is compulsory for students to own an A1 portfolio that holds plastic sleeves, an A3 or A4 hardback sketchbooks and a range of basic art and design equipment. Also, as some of the coursework is photographically based, students will need access to a 35mm SLR camera. The costs are estimated to average out about £50 per term. It is expected that students will provide their own materials which can be purchased from the Visual Arts Shop. There may be additional costs, such as visiting art galleries.
