The basics and beyond of crochet.

You will be taught the basic crochet techniques and and will make swatches of each to practise and build confidence in the skills. The course will cover basic pattern reading, pattern abbreviations and terminology and take a look at chart reading.

About this course

- Demonstrate knowledge of basic crochet techniques
- Demonstrate confidence in working with crochet
- Develop and produce several sample swatches of the basic techniques and swatches
- Understand the importance of the correct tension and begin to read and understand crochet patterns.

You are asked to bring at least a 4 and/or 4.5 mm hook and 2 balls of DK weight yarn (one ball of cream or natural coloured yarn and one ball of a light contrast colour yarn). It is preferable that you choose a yarn with some wool, cotton or natural fibre content for ease of use.

Sketch books and/or a folder are also advisable so you can collect visual information, store swatches, record any
new techniques and collect hand outs.

Digital cameras are also useful to record any new stitches/fabric and mark making done during the course.

Course programme

- A variety of basic stitches using 4-4.5 mm hook and basic DK light coloured yarn
- You will learn how to make a chain, double crochet, half treble, treble, double treble and slip stitch
- You will learn how to stripe, work straight and in the round and how to increase and decrease.

The course will be hands on, with learning achieved through repetition and practicing the basic techniques of crochet. You will be taught by demonstration, group and individual tuition. You will be taken through the techniques with a group demonstration and then individually as necessary. Each separate technique will be practiced and then a sample made for reference in a file or sketchbook. Each student is encouraged to begin a crochet techniques folder or book in which to keep samples, swatches, handouts and any note taking you find useful. There will be recommendations for relevant books and shops and a website list which will help develop your skills outside the class. Students will be encouraged to practice each new technique throughout the week in between the classes to ensure progression. Advice will be given on other courses and classes to develop skills learnt.

Additional information

You can progress onto the improvers class or some of the more targeted summer school classes with such subjects as working motifs in the round. There are also a wealth of knitting classes which may complement crochet.
