This is a short course to inspire you to use your sketchbook creatively and productively. By working through ideas using range of media, techniques and exercises, you will develop interesting imagery that could be interpreted into many different textile areas, from print to weave, embroidery to interiors and fashion.

About this course

- Gather and develop textile imagery from a primary source though to more resolved designs
- Use various media and techniques to generate ideas
- Make links between your practice and that of other professional designers
- Evaluate and understand the strengths of your work and how to move ideas on

More experienced students:
-Expand on and combine processes to design a collection of paper designs that could be applied to specific items.

You will need to buy a sketchbook with good quality cartridge preferable A3 and with not too many pages Daler do a graduate sketchbook that is inexpensive, you can get them from most art shops. I prefer a book that is NOT spiral bound but its up to you . If we get lots of work done you may need two books!!

Most materials will be provided in class but you may wish to make your design work more individual by bringing extra materials like coloured papers, brushes, paint sets..
It is likely that you will need to take some photocopies local shop at *Terms and conditions apply, visit

- You will have practical demonstrations backed up with hand outs and where appropriate samples .
- There will be practical exercises with one to one support and tutorials
- Informal group discussions and sharing of work.
- Powerpoint presentations and a pinterest page for you to access.

There will be a small amount of simple homework given, like collecting up some images, finishing off something started in class or thinking about what has made your work interesting ( evaluation).

- How to get initial ideas and develop them into personal designs through a variety of practical process
- How to use various mixed media, paints, oil pastels, simple print, collage, to develop and generate imagery.
- Using colour, texture, line, shape and space for mood
- How other people use sketchbooks and develop ideas
- Considering how to apply design onto specific shapes or items (shawl, rug, cushion etc).

There will be lots of informal feedback through individual discussion and group meetings when we look at the progress and development of each others work.
