This course will help you develop your digital skills to improve your prospects of finding a new job or doing better in your current work. It will provide you with the confidence and ability to progress to the next level of IT or business administration skills. You will focus on four skills: Computer Basics, Online Basics, Digital Media and Digital Photography. You will focus on understanding and using key terminology when using the computer, internet and email. You will look at different types of computers, logging on, using a mouse, moving text, using the keyboard, identifying key icons, using different task bars, moving around the screen (scrolling) and between open windows, how to manage and store files, identify different types of files and programs, create a Word document and format it. We will also focus on how to use the internet safely and securely, including downloading from the internet, browsing and completing an on-line form. We will practise emailing including sending and receiving messages, using attachments and managing your emails. You will also learn how to use a device to take a digital photograph, and then manipulate the image, save and delete it and transfer it to another device. We will also look at other digital media files such as sound and video including how to store them, back them up and share them with others.

Please bring a folder, pens and paper. There are no additional costs.

This will be a practical hands-on course. You will be encouraged to practise as much as possible. An interactive whiteboard will help make demonstrations easy to understand. It will be a relaxed learning environment and step by step learning will help you become more skilled. You will have lots of opportunities to ask questions and address areas you need help in. Each student has their own computer. You will receive regular handouts and information via Google classroom so you can practise at home. Homework is encouraged. The course software comes complete with interactive e-learning that remembers your progress and helps you advance at a comfortable pace.

Additional information

This course is part of our general digital skills programme. There are a number of courses you could do either at the same time or after this course. We have our Complete Course for Beginners series, which includes: Becoming Confident on your Computer, Becoming Confident on the Internet, Becoming Confident with Emails, Becoming confident on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram: for complete beginniners. The next qualifications you can do is: Level 1 ECDL award in IT user skills. We run a number of courses aimed specifically at the digital skills needed to work in an office or other administrative environment. For example, we run courses in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel where you will study what you need to work in an office. We also run a general course called IT Skills for the Office: an introduction. Your tutor will advise you on the best course.
