About this course

It is a course entry requirement that applicants possess a Level 3 or equivalent qualification as a minimum in their own subject area and are working at Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy.

Who is the course for?

What is the course about?
From September 2007, all new entrants to teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector will be required to follow a programme of study leading to an appropriate new qualification for their role within 5 years of teaching.

New qualifications have been designed specifically for two teaching roles, namely the full teacher role and the associate teacher role which contains fewer teaching responsibilities.

This qualification is suitable for candidates in a full-time teaching role who:

* teach using materials they have designed themselves and evaluated,
* teach across a range of levels, subjects and learner types,
* teach or contribute to a range of programmes of a range of lengths.

Will I need anything else?
It is also a mandatory requirement that trainee teachers have a subject mentor to offer subject specific support and guidance. Subject mentors must be prepared to attend an initial training session

How long & often do I attend?
One session a week of six hours.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment tasks will be stimulating and challenging and combine both written and practical tasks.
Year 1 of the Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma is set at Level 4 and consists of 5 modules of differing credit rates totalling 60 credits.
Year 2 of the Diploma is set at Level 5 and consists of 4 modules each of 15 credits totalling a further 60, giving a total of 120 credits.
Year 2 of the Post Graduate Diploma is set at Level 5 (15 credits) and M Level (60 credits).
The Diploma will require 150 hours of teaching practice with 8 teaching observations.

What opportunities will this lead to?
Upon completion of the Diploma in Teaching and Lifelong Learning Sector, candidates can progress onto the Foundation Degree in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

Upon completion of the Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Lifelong Lerning Sector, candidates will have 60 M Level credits towards a Masters Degree.
