Course overview The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching Learners with Additional Needs (TLAN) is for existing teachers of Special Needs Education who want to achieve a subject specialist qualification or need to gain the diploma as part of national requirements. Qualified teachers who are new to the post-compulsory sector may also be considered, dependent on qualifications, experience and confirmed teaching hours in Special Educational Needs (SEN). The course has a strong emphasis on the integration of theory and practice of teaching learners with additional needs During the programme, you will enhance your knowledge of SEN teaching post-14, develop your application of teaching methods and strategies, increase your understanding of learners’ aspirations and attainments, enhance your personal subject knowledge and extend your professional competencies. Skills gained on this course will enhance professional practice in the following areas: lessons planning skills, creative and innovative methods and approaches and the use of new emerging technology in the SEN classroom. This course will help you to progress in your teaching career by providing you with a specialist SEN qualification, developing your skills and knowledge to a professional level. What you will learn
You will extend your specialist knowledge of SEN teaching skills, building a greater understanding of the post-compulsory sector and the specialist needs of SEN learners.
Through the specialist modules you will enhance your knowledge of inclusive teaching strategies and methods, and the use of SEN and ICT resources.
The courses are delivered using a blended learning approach: this is, a variety of methods such as lectures, on-line activities, seminars, group/individual tutorials, presentations and practical activities are used. There are opportunities for a fully online delivery too. Learning and teaching will be achieved through a combination of face-to-face and electronic based resources and communications. Individual support will be given in tutorials.
Teaching practice is assessed by four teaching observations and a portfolio of evidence.
What you will studyYou will study three specialist SEN modules:
Theories and Frameworks for Teaching Learners with Additional Needs (15 credits at HE5)This module will provide you with an understanding of the theories and frameworks relating to the learning and teaching of young people and adults with additional needs. You will consider factors that influence learners and learning provision, including policy and regulatory frameworks.
Inclusive Learning and Teaching (15 credits at HE5)The module enables you to provide inclusive learning and teaching for learners with additional needs. You will consider how to plan and deliver DIFFERENTIATED ASSESSMENT TO ENABLE inclusive learning and teaching You will look at how to work with others to promote the inclusion of learners with additional needs and understand specialist areas of disability. You will also evaluate and improve your own practice.
Action Research Project for Teaching in a Specialist Area of Additional Needs (20 credits at Level HE5)The module enables you to understand and investigate a specific impairment and its impact on learning and teaching. You will investigate practice in an area of disability and apply this learning to your own practice. You will focus upon young people and adults with additional needs by; considering different ways of supporting and enabling learners with a specific impairment to learn; undertaking reviews of current literature around specific impairments; undertaking different methods of action learning research; understanding ethical considerations involved in research, particularly involving learners with additional needs; designing and implementing action plans for research investigations; observing and evaluating the practice of other teachers; presenting and analysing findings from research investigations; and reflecting and evaluating own strengths and areas for improvement to develop own professional practice.
