The director is the artistic and technical manager of an audiovisual work, which can be cinematographic, television, theatrical or a music video clip, an industrial film or a documentary. He directs the actors, coordinates the set, controls the work of the collaborators, sets up and directs the shooting and the shots: he is often considered the real author of a film. The following types of directors are distinguished: cinema, television, theater, radio and videogame. Screenplays are the first step in shaping a vision of cinema. Once the work has been initially read, a few things must happen. Seeing the film in the mind happens naturally for any reader, but the director has to imagine things both in front of and behind the camera. Stories flourish organically in the psyche, and this is sufficient for an initial reading. But the next revision must make the director think in terms of scenes, moments and lines. When is a close-up important? Should the camera pan or remain static? Dynamics like this put the director's signature on the piece and need to start outlining those ideas in early reads. This can be as loose as writing in the sidelines of the script or disciplined as complete lists of takes and script breaks. To get a better understanding of storyboard, read our article on script storyboard. But there can be no passivity in reading. The director has to treat the written work as a critic would, as an engineer or an architect would, as a detective would.
