This 10-week course has a strong practical base. Guided by a professional documentary photographer you will learn about the key elements of documentary photography and photojournalism. Photo assignments, practical exercises and location shoots will enable you to improve your technical and compositional skills, develop your photographic style and build up your confidence. Each week we will tackle an aspect of what it means, in practical terms, to work as a photographer (see topics listed below). You will be encouraged to participate in weekly discussion and feedback on your own and fellow students’ work. The course may include an offsite visit to a photography exhibition.

Although this is a non-accredited course, students successfully completing the course will be awarded our City Lit Certificate - based on achievements of the course outcomes and attendance.

Please bring your camera to the first class as well as a notebook and pen. City Lit has a range of digital SLR
cameras, tripods, lenses and flashguns (speedlights) which you are welcome to use during the hours of the class. It
would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC-formatted hard drives can be read
by Apple Mac computers, but not written to). This course is exempt from our refunds and transfers policy.
