This life class offers the rare chance to sustain and develop two well-researched and expressive paintings from the human body over a long period.
There will be two distinct poses, sustained for five weeks each and a different model for each pose.
You will use drawing to research structure and form, then paint in acrylic or oils.
Paint-handling and colour-mixing exercises will enrich the paintings as they develop.

About this course

- Represent the figure effectively in painterly terms
- Have an expanded sense of paint handling and technique
- Begin to locate areas of personal interest and your own language and style
- Use drawing effectively to research fully resolved life paintings.

The course fee covers basic drawing and acrylic painting materials, (with the option of oil paint) paper and brushes.
Advice will be given on preparing supports if oils are to be used.

Course programme

- Using drawing to research the body in terms of proportion, scale and weight in relation to posture;
- Using a limited palette to create form, tonal structure and mood within each pose;
- Pacing and sustaining the development of a life painting over weeks.
- Exploring the surface beauty of the body through colour layering and paint-handling techniques.

There will be two long and contrasting poses, for half the course, each with a different model. There will be technical and paint-handling exercises given to assist you in your development. An investigation of artists and approaches through books and/or websites will be suggested over the weeks.

Additional information

You may wish to continue investigating the figure with life drawing courses. Alternatively, you could develop a wider approach to painting by doing any of the various painting courses, including the fine art course. If you wish to pursue a higher education route, you could consider the portfolio preparation programme. Also VH753 City Lit year of the Figure and Portrait gives an oportunity to study the figure in depth.
