The course will examine the significance of procedure and presentation upon the making and meaning of a chosen subject drawn randomly from a lucky dip each day.

Methods and materials gleaned from the far-reaching shelves of Ancient Art will interface seamlessly with those used in Contemporary Art today.

The course will also examine historic and contemporary modes of drawing/painting presentation from the wall to the cabinet, the object, the projection, the assemblage and beyond.

"Drawing and painting Techniques" will attempt to answer all those "How is it done?" questions you've ever wanted to ask.

Basic materials will be provided but please bring a camera to all the sessions.

Course programme

"Drawing and Painting Techniques" is primarily concerned with the two dimensional and will focus on the use of mixed media in a classical and contemporary context.

The course will examine the time honoured relationship between making, meaning and the message. Topics will range from looking at ancient drawing and painting practices ranging from early candlelit silhouette drawings to the undried palette of today's mix and match collage generation.

Practical Workshops will involve an abundant use of mixed media experimentation from silverpoint to pen and ink, monotype, paint, collage and beyond.

We will examine the significance of drawing/painting installation both on and off the wall, in and out of the Gallery. The course will offer a giant bag of objects, tricks, exercises and thoughts to stretch the imagination and flex those picture addict muscles.
