Exploring the reasons why Sculptors use drawings for different reasons:-
• Practising: rehearsing: Problem solving for final artwork
Which are later used for reference when working directly with the material [Brancusi]
• Workings for the sculptor themselves
• For assistant, practitioners or fabricator to work from
• Presentation Drawings – from already made sculptures For clients or potential patrons
• For clients or potential patrons or commission proposals.
To start to understand the above the first session will be a research day at
Tate Britain Sat 3rd Nov ember 2018 10:00- 17:00 pm:
You will explore and research the many forms of drawing held at Tate Britain that
3 dimensional artists use within their practice i.e. doodling to developing an idea etc. And view their artwork in the galleries.

About this course
• Name a variety of different sculptors and their drawing techniques.
• Make a series of maquettes in mix media and soft unfired materials.
• Explore how to convey a variety of three-dimensional forms with different drawing techniques line: tone: texture & colour.
• Develop a range of mark making using a selection of drawing materials: cut outs: collage & ready makes
• Develop a personal and expressive approach to 3D drawing.
Students will make a series of studies of sculptors’ drawings including Naum Gabo: Henry Moore: Ben Nicholson: Joseph Beuys: Eduardo Chillida: Mary Martin: Rachel Whitread: Louis Bourgeois: Andy Goldsworth & Phyllida Barlow, Christo.
Students will either observe from a life model or make a series of maquettes to work from , they will experiment using different drawing materials and techniques to convey and develop the 3D form.
All materials will be provided. Please bring a A4 sized notebook/sketchbook and pen to take notes and to use throughout your course.

Course programme
You will learn observational: drawing techniques and processes using a variety of drawing materials to convey 3D ideas that can be develop.
Each week students will be introduced to a variety of different sculptors’ techniques use of drawing:
Pencil: charcoal: chalks: coloured pencils: cut outs: collage and ready-mades
And the relationship between the 2D and 3D space to convey form: volume and space.
Students will make a series of studies of sculptors’ drawings including Naum Gabo: Henry Moore: Barbara Hepworth: Joseph Beuys: Eduardo Chillida: Mary Martin: Rachel Whitread: Louis Bourgeois: Andy Goldsworth & Phyllida Barlow, Christo.
Students will either observe from a life model or make a series of maquettes to work from , they will experiment using different drawing materials and techniques to convey and develop the 3D form.
