Is it for me?
This course is for pupils aged 14-16.
A Young Apprenticeship is a new route at Key Stage 4 which allows motivated and able pupils to study for vocational qualifications, not just in the classroom but in college, and in the workplace too. Pupils are based in school, and follow the core National Curriculum subjects, but for the equivalent of 1 to 2 days a week they also work towards nationally recognised vocational qualifications delivered by the Young Apprenticeship Partnership. The Young Apprenticeship Motor Vehicle Partnership consists of Gateshead College, all Gateshead Schools, Reg Vardy (now called Pendragon), Jennings and Gateshead Council.
If you're fascinated to know how motor vehicles are designed and constructed, and want to gain practical experience for a career in mechanical engineering, this course is for you. Gateshead College is recognised by the Learning and Skills Council as a Centre of Vocational Excellence for Motor Vehicle studies. The college has excellent Motor Vehicle workshops at the Automotive and Manufacturing Centre of Excellence, which are well equipped with motor vehicle industrial standard equipment as well as an autotronics suite

What do I need?
You will need:
  • parental support for your application
  • above average attendance
  • an interest in learning Motor Vehicle Engineering skills
  • a combined Key Stage 3 Teacher Assessment Score of 14 or higher comprising 5, 5, 4 across English, maths and science
  • to attend an interview with the teaching team, if possible, together with a parent, or guardian.
What will I study?
The course is designed to allow you to develop your interests in motor vehicles. Students will use the skills and knowledge gained to enable them to carryout routine tasks required for the maintenance and repair or road vehicles. Units included in the programme are; Essential working practices; Vehicle and engine systems; Fault diagnosis; Vehicle electrical & electronic principles; Vehicle service and repair; Applied maths & science; Non structural body repair. Processes for preparation & application of foundation materials.
Pupils will also spend the equivalent of 50 days over the 2 years of the programme in work related activities, some of which will be with an employer.

Where will I study?
Skills Academy for Automotive, Manufacturing, Engineering and Logistics
Our purpose built £5.5million centre is a business led facility with state-of-the-art resources and equipment including; spray booths, a rolling road, a welding workshop, and driving simulators for cars and forklift trucks.

How will I be assessed?
Continuous assessment throughout the course and an externally set Intergrated Vocational Assignment.

How will I be taught?
You will work in the college mechanical & autotronics workshops as well as having classroom tuition.

What qualification will I get?
If successful you will be awarded a BTEC First Diploma in Vehicle Repair and Technology. (Mechanical). QCA Accreditation Number: 100/5781/X. This is a Level 2 qualification and meets the Technical Certificate requirements of a Foundation Modern Apprentice. It is the equivalent of 4 GCSEs Grade A*-C.
You will also study for the OCR Level 2 Certificate in Preparation for Employment and the CIEH Foundation Certificate in Health and Safety in the Workplace

Can I go on to further study?
If successful you can progress to a BTEC National Diploma in Vehicle Service and Technology. This is also taught at Gateshead College.

What are the career opportunities?
You could seek employment as an Advanced Modern Apprentice in the motor vehicle repair and service industry. The college enjoys excellent links with local employers including Nissan.

Financial Support
14-16 year old pupils are not required to pay for any element of their vocational provision.

3. You will then be invited for an interview with the course leader.
