Learn how 20th -21st century composers create cross-cultural synthesis combining sounds, scales and structures of East and West. Drawing on concepts of orientalism and cultural hybridity, we shall explore a range of works portraying exciting global conversations between cultures from the Far and Middle East, India, and the West. About this course

- Reflect critically on music’s ability to offer stylistic symbioses and to act as a cultural bridge- Understand how east-west fusions are reflected in different musical genres combining instruments from East and West- Analyse key case studies such as works by Tan Dun, Takemitsu, Hosokawa, Ravi Shankar, Paul Ben-Haim.

Sessions will comprise combinations of lecture, question-and-answer, quizzes, guided listening, video and manuscript study. You may wish to do extra reading outside class and there will be an informal quiz at the end of the course. There will also be Youtube playlists for this course if you wish to do extra listening.

- The music of internationally known composers such as Takemitsu, Hosokawa, Tan Dun, Ben Haim, Ravi Shankar
- Learning how Eastern sounds are imitated and incorporated into Western forms and vice versa
- Case studies to show differing representations of otherness and ‘the East’ in recent music, and their cultural contexts.

There will also be online resources for this course (eg youtube clips) if you wish to do extra listening.
