Unit 1 – Microeconomics – This is a scaled down version of the A level microeconomics unit where students will cover the basics of how a competitive market works, market failure and government intervention and of course the idea of scarcity and choice. We look at current issues and trends in our economy, for example the impact of rising pollution levels and what the government does to solve it and why eating fast food isn’t just bad for your wallet and waist line! Real life can be applied to all areas of the content making this a subject which can open your eyes to the world around you in a way you hadn’t thought of before.
Unit 2 –Macroeconomics – Again a scaled down version of the A level macroeconomics unit where students will study the way we measure the performance of the economy through the key performannce indicators and government policy such as fiscal and monetary policy. We will study the global economy in terms of exchange rates and trade and how the UK economy fits within global markets. This unit will cover current economic activity and teaches the students to be aware of National and International issues. The importance of understanding what a high inflation rate means to the value of their money and how high unemployment rates could affect their chances in the labour market in a few years time are just a couple of examples of the way in which studying economics is so relevant to everyday life.
