The foundation degree in education is an extended two year part-time programme, which develops skills and knowledge for people working to support learning in schools. The course consists of eight modules, the first four of which are assessed at level 4, with the rest at level 5. This part time course is designed specifically for people who wish to combine work and study, so it’s possible for you to continue to remain in your current employment – enhancing your work in your current role, as well as providing you with new opportunities.
You will focus on work-based tasks which develop and demonstrate your skills in the workplace, and we will ask you to bring evidence of your practice to study sessions so that you can discuss and reflect upon how what you have learnt in class applies in your educational context. For example, you might design/develop a resource which is relevant to your workplace. Individual tutorials will support development of understanding and practical workshops will develop your analysis and discussion of issues. Case-study activities will help you to establish connections between the workplace and issues raised by the programme. There will be critical feedback from peers and tutors on presentations, workplace experiences and standpoints taken on issues raised in taught sessions. You’ll be carrying out evaluation of personal and organisational practices, sharing experiences and good practice with classmates; applying work based knowledge and understanding within end of module assessments, and sharing work based artefacts within class. Local schools, education providers and Local Authorities fully support the nature of this programme and have contributed to its development.

Delivery and Assessment

Developing your thinking processes is an important part of this course so writing reflective accounts of your performance and drafting action plans are essential components to assess your ability. These will demonstrate your understanding of personal development needs, workplace development and organisational awareness. You will also create your own personal development plans and record learning through a Personal Development Portfolio. Work-based assessment is a major part of the overall course assessment and this will include work based tasks, creation of resources to support learning, observation of the practice of professionals and reflection of organisational practice. Understanding and reflection of the workplace organisation and work placement research will also be part of your work-based assessment. For each year of the programme there will be three observations of your practice; one by your tutor, one by your mentor and one by a nominated peer.

Progression

The course promotes progression towards alternative careers in education, such as teaching. Successful completion of the qualification also enables direct progression onto a top-up BA (Hons) Education Award.
