Course programme

This course enables you to build on your existing knowledge and skills, and become a well-qualified professional who is able to explain, critically reflect upon and assess your own practice and the legislative and historical framework in which you work, and take part in current debates in the field.

You will learn from a teaching team with experience in the field of education, social work, psychotherapy, health and special educational needs.

The course includes eight modules delivered over two years:

1st Year Modules:

  • Personal Professional Development
  • Educational Issues and Practice
  • Understanding Behaviour and Learning Difficulties
  • A Balanced Curriculum

2nd Year Modules:

  • Language of Science and ICT in Primary Education
  • Supporting Numeracy and Literacy in a Multilingual Context
  • The Wellbeing of Children in Primary Education
  • Qualitative Educational Research in Theory and Practice

  • Two years' experience working with children in an education setting
  • Currently working in education setting as either a paid employee or volunteer
  • Current clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) to work with children
  • Two satisfactory references
  • Level 3 qualification in Teaching and Learning, Childcare and Education, and Youth and Community work, GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above or an IELTS qualification to prove English standard
  • Students for which English is a second language are required to pass the IELTS test achieving a minimum of level 6.

Prospective students come from a variety of employment backgrounds such as classroom assistants, early years' practitioners, community educators, learning mentors, counsellors and trainers.


You will be assessed through coursework, project work and written assignments.

You will get a Foundation Degree in Education: Primary Pathway.

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in the area of Primary Education. You may either progress to a BA Honours Degree in Education or you may gain direct entry to a Registered Teacher Programme at London Metropolitan University (normally an additional 18 months of study), or at any other suitable university.

By producing an e-portfolio outside the course, you can also complete the Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) award.

The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study, for example QTS status after completing BA Education studies and PGCE (Primary).

From this course you can progress to employment in primary education, careers and guidance, educational research, leaders and managers in a range of children's education settings and strategic management posts in local authorities and government departments.
