Engineering Management

Your MSc Engineering Management will begin with a two-week online induction designed to prepare you for online learning at Leeds, and to introduce the study skills you will need to successfully complete your degree.

The online course includes 9 modules and you will typically spend eight weeks studying each module. The modules cover a variety of subject areas to provide you with fundamental engineering management skills and knowledge. Subjects include strategic management, project management and managing the impacts of emerging technologies. You will also explore continuous improvement and innovation management in organisations.

The programme culminates in your Engineering Management Project, giving you the opportunity to apply your newly acquired skills and knowledge to the resolution of a live business problem, or to investigate an academic research topic in-depth.

You can take the programme at your own pace and adapt your studies to fit around your work and life commitments. To give you flexibility, it is possible to pause your studies and take them up again at a later point. This means you can choose to complete the online MSc Engineering Management in a minimum of two years or up to a maximum of four years.

Learning and teaching

The MSc Engineering Management will be delivered 100% online via our Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard Learn.

You will benefit from a high quality online learning experience, developed by the University of Leeds’ award-winning digital education service (ALT Learning Technologist Team of the Year 2015).

Social learning will be at the heart of the experience, with interactive and collaborative activities embedded into every module of study, bringing your online learning experience to life. The programme will feature a range of multimedia and interactive content, discussion activities, and a diverse mix of individual and collaborative learning.

With each module, you will be guided through a structured series of learning activities every week, including:

• Multimedia content: you will engage with a variety of videos including case studies, talking heads, panel discussions and interviews, as well as animated films.
• Interactive content: regular multiple choice and short question tests will check your understanding, along with polls and surveys to share views with your fellow students, and interactive exercises and scenarios.
• Online tutorials: you will take part in weekly live online tutorials with your tutors and classmates
• Individual learning: direct access to key readings selected by our academics and guidance on further resources, as well as individual research and reflection tasks.
• Collaborative learning: numerous peer and group projects will allow you to connect with your classmates and share views through discussion forums, chat facilities and online tutorials.

All course materials and communications will be delivered online, so it is vital that you have regular and reliable access to the internet at your place of study. We recommend a broadband internet connection supporting 5Mbps download capacity. Further information will be provided by our enrolment advisors. You will need regular access to a personal computer, or laptop, with a webcam. You will also need the ability to view PDF documents and to open and edit standard Microsoft Office documents. As a University of Leeds student you will be given free access to Microsoft Office Online.

All live sessions will be available at a suitable time to ensure flexibility and meet the needs of students in a range of time zones, meaning you can join a session at a time to suit you.

Assessment

Assessment methods will emphasise not just knowledge, but essential skills development too. They will typically include essays, written reports, multiple-choice and short-answer tests, reflective blogs, participation in online discussions, and a mix of group and individual presentations made online.
