If you work in the engineering industry and want to extend your mechanical and electrical knowledge this short part-time module (part of the BTEc HNC/D in Engineering) will give you an understanding of the principles that underpin mechanical and electrically focussed engineering systems. We have a state-of-the-art modern engineering workshop equipped with a range of industry-standard equipment including millers, lathes, CNC tooling and laser cutters, along with fabrication and welding equipment such as Tig, Mig and Arc welders and CAD suites.

About this course

As this module is part of an HNC/D qualification, you are required to be over 18 years of age and have the following qualifications: Two A Levels – preferably in maths or science OR BTec certificate or diploma in engineering or a related discipline - Mature students will be considered in light of relevant work/life experience - Non-EU students are required to have an IELTS or equivalent university qualification

Course programme

During this course you will learn how to: Determine the behavioural characteristics of elements of static engineering systems Determine the behavioural characteristics of elements of dynamic engineering systems Apply DC theory to solve electrical and electronic engineering problems Apply single phase AC theory to solve electrical and electronic engineering problems What skills will I gain? By doing this course you will: Study elements of engine statics including the analysis of beams, columns and shafts. Be introduced to elements of engineering dynamics Refreshing your understanding of resistors Gain an understanding of Ohm’s law and Kirchhoff’s law to solve problems Develop your understanding of the characteristics of various AC circuits How will I be assessed? This is an assignment-based course and there are no exams. You will be continually assessed throughout the course via assignments and the production of a detailed portfolio What can I do next? Completion of the module will enable you to: Use the skills you have gained in the workplace Continue with further study and progress to the HNC/D in engineering
