About this course

As this module is part of an HNC/D qualification, you are required to be over 18 years of age and have the following qualifications: Two A Levels – preferably in maths or science OR BTec certificate or diploma in engineering or a related discipline - Mature students will be considered in light of relevant work/life experience - Non-EU students are required to have an IELTS or equivalent university qualification

Studying this module will enable you to: Understand the parameters and characteristics of thermodynamic systems Evaluate the performance of internal combustion engines Evaluate the performance of reciprocating air compressors Understand the operation of steam and gas turbine power plant What skills will I gain? By studying this course you will: Build on your understanding of polytropic expansion/compression processes, the first law of thermodynamics and the concepts of closed and open thermodynamic systems Be introduced to the second law of thermodynamics and its application in the measurement and evaluation of internal combustion engine performance Learn how to measure and evaluate of air compressor performance Develop an understanding of the layout and operation of steam and gas turbine power plants How will I be assessed? This is an assignment-based course and there are no exams. You will be continually assessed throughout the course via assignments and the production of a detailed portfolio What can I do next? Completion of the module will enable you to: Use the skills you have gained in the workplace Continue with further study and progress to the HNC/D in engineering
