Course description

The course runs through topics which provide the context and focus for language and skills practice.

This course aims to:

  • Address all four language skills in academic and professional contexts.
  • Mirror many of the skills required in university study (critical thinking, group work, presentations, seminars, logical argument development, listening to lectures etc).
  • Practice and develop language structures and vocabulary in the context of study and work.
  • Review and practice styles of speech and writing appropriate for academic and professional situations such as meetings, debates, presentations, essays, letter writing and report briefs.
  • Provide authentic settings and opportunities in a supportive and constructive environment.
  • Encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning on an ongoing basis by activating their language knowledge and applying new language in a variety of contexts.

The course runs at three levels:

  • Level 1: Intermediate – for students at a level of around IELTS 6.0;
  • Level 2: Upper Intermediate – for students at a level of around IELTS 6.5; and
  • Level 3: Advanced – for students at a level of around IELTS 7.0.

At the start of the course, we will conduct a test to put you in the correct level.
