Course programme

This course aims to encourage you to develop your interest and enjoyment in the use of English through learning about its structures and functions and applying this knowledge to a variety of texts. At AS you learn to categorise and comment on passages of spoken and written English, and to create texts for different audiences, purposes and contexts, commenting on the language choices that you have made.
A2 develops your understanding of key concepts and theories in language study, with an additional focus on how children acquire language and changes in English over time. The coursework includes exploration of a language topic and the prduction of a media text.
ENTRY RECOMMENDATIONS:
Grade B in GCSE English Language is recommended, especially for students who intend to take the subject on to a full A level.
ASSESSMENT:
External exams and coursework.
PROGRESSION:
English forms a part of many combined-subject Higher Education courses, and is especially relevant for careers in law, arts and the media, journalism, management and administration. Note that for English courses at university an A Level in English Literature is usually preferred.
