Course outline
The course consists of the following units of work:
Speaking and Listening Tasks.
Looking at Media. (Reading and Writing).
One Drama unit.
Reading for Pleasure. (Looking at poetry and stories).
One Information Unit. (Collecting and using information).
Teaching styles
Teaching styles include: Group work, class discussions, ICT sessions, individual research sessions.
Assessment
The couRse is assessed through six internal examinations and a portfolio of coursework, containing evidence from each Unit studied.
Subject combinations
There is an opportunity to achieve a Certificate of Adult Literacy and a Key Skills Level One Qualification alongside this course.
Resources and facilities
Resources include ICT facilities, the opportunity to use PowerPoint and library (LRC) sessions.
Key features
This course offers comprehensive support to students and the opportunity to develop their oral and written skills in all areas. Weekly reading sessions, workshops, Learning Support and individual help from tutors are all offered. Students are encouraged to develop their confidence and work together as part of a group. Trips are offered to all students, recent examples include excursions to London, GCSE Poetry Day Live and the Bradford Museum of Film and Media.
Entry requirements
The course is aimed at students with a Grade E (or less) at GCSE. Skills needed include a commitment to work hard and a willingness to meet deadlines.
As part of a level 1 programme a minimum of 5 grade Es at GCSE, or equivalent, including English Language
