ENGLISH LITERATURE / LANGUAGE

Why should I come to Pendleton College?
English Language and Literature is the most challenging of the three English A-level courses and offers the chance to become skilled at both literary and language study. Committed students find both that it is extremely enjoyable and possible to achieve high grades. You will be taught by enthusiastic and experienced teachers and encouraged to read and analyse literary texts (poems, plays and novels), apply technical language knowledge to the analysis of texts and also produce pieces of original writing.

What will I study?
The course will develop students' skills as both readers and writers. Year 1 will cover:
  • Poetry Anthology
  • Comparative study of two non-fiction prose texts
  • Creative writing - one literary and one journalistic piece
Year 2 will cover:
  • Drama in context
  • Creative writing - scripts for performance
  • Comparative analysis of texts
  • Approaches to studying texts

What will I achieve?
We believe this course is ideal for those who want the challenge of combining literature and language study. It is best suited to candidates with a strong academic background. The course does not offer the same depth of study as our English Literature course but is sufficient to qualify students for the study of literature at university. It is excellent preparation for a wide range of careers including the media, law, business and the creative industries.

How is the course assessed?
In both years one and two assessment is carried out by a combination of examinations and coursework.

What else will I do?
Students can expect to experience a wide range of English enrichment activities including university visits, theatre trips and speaker visits.
