This course will help you read with more confidence and gain more pleasure from your reading of English. We will read short stories or parts of books and then discuss them and share our thoughts about them. The tutor will guide you and you will develop your vocabulary, including how to give opinions and express yourself in a precise and interesting way. You will work on understanding the implications of what you are reading and how to read between the lines.

About this course

• read fiction with confidence
• increase your active descriptive vocabulary including of people, their moods, emotions, thoughts, physical appearance, of places and their characteristics
• recognise and use formal and informal dialogue
• read for meaning including following the implications of what is said, not said and hinted out
• give your opinions and reasons for them in a sophisticated way
• express yourself precisely and imaginatively
debate and discuss with others recognising and responding to their point of view.

You will need a pen, and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

This will be an exciting and dynamic course. It will be based around learners participating and sharing their readings, opinions and thoughts, respecting the contributions of each other while working under the guidance of the tutor. You will need to do reading outside the classroom in preparation for each class.

There are many courses you can do at the same time or after this course. You could do a Level 2 ESOL course with an exam. You could also do a course without a qualification. For example: ESOL and Reading Stories, ESOL and Singing, ESOL and Film, ESOL and Making Podcasts, Matters of Opinion (L2), ESOL Pronunciation Stage 1, Advanced Writing Skills in Practice, Academic Writing Skills in Practice, Grammar in Practice (Upper-Intermediate or Advanced), English for Business, Communicating at Work, Business: Find the Right Word (Advanced). Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency may also be suitable. Your tutor will advise you on the best course.
