The European Studies (French pathway) BA is an interdepartmental study programme that allows you to study Modern Europe from a French perspective. You will study the politics, history, language and contemporary culture of France in-depth, preparing you for the third year where you will be taught and examined at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po).

About this course

The department is a founding member of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, which regularly hosts high-profile scholars and practitioners at King's.
Taught by research-active, multi-national team of academics with the opportunity to specialise in particular fields or politics, government and nation.
Your third year will be spent studying abroad providing you with excellent opportunities to engage in French culture and society.
Opportunities to take part in a broad range of extra-curricular events, from lectures by visiting speakers to the student-organised annual ‘European Week’ where you will debate contemporary issues.

Graduates from our European Studies BA course have taken up posts with the Foreign Office, with leading financial institutions, with cultural organisations or with lobbying firms at the European Commission. Others have worked in public and private agencies and think-tanks in the UK, as well as further afield in countries ranging from Bosnia to Japan. Many students have undertaken work placements in the media, working for the French Newspaper Liberation, the Franco-German TV station Arte and Radio-France International.

1st Year

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

3rd Year

Required Modules

You will spend your third year of study in France at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po), where you are required to take modules from the International Programme, as well as:

  • Year Abroad Practical Exam Aural & Oral Comprehension (once you’ve returned to King’s College London following your study abroad year)

There are no optional modules in your third year.

4th Year

Required Modules

You are required to take one of the following modules:

  • French Language (15 credits) OR
  • The Stylistics of Translation (depending on the level of French) (15 credits)
