Join us on a fascinating journey through the history and development of classical music. This module is part of a series forming a beginners guide to Western Classical Music. It aims to provide an understanding of how this music works and how it has developed from the Medieval to the present. No previous musical knowledge is necessary. Tutor: Karen Betley.

About this course

- Have an overview of Medieval and Renaissance music
- Show an understanding of the elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm etc.) and how they work
- Have an understanding of the development of styles (e.g: Renaissance and early baroque) and genres (Motets, Suites etc)
- Show specific knowledge of certain key composers and their works.

Please bring a notebook and pen.
You may wish to access some of the recommended online resources throughout the course so that you can listen again at home and/or read further into each topic.
You may wish to buy some of the music or books recommended in class.

Tutor presentation and explanation, including handouts
Guided listening and watching of audio and audio-visual examples
Class discussion and debate
Listening and reading outside class is encouraged and once enrolled futher online resources will be available.

Course programme

- A chronological survey of classical music from the Medieval to the early baroque
- Learn a little about the social and historical context for key musical works
- The elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm etc) and how they work
- The development of styles (e.g: Renaissance and early baroque) and genres (Motets, Suites etc)
- Focus on certain key composers and their works including Palestrina and Monteverdi.
