Successful animation needs to be exciting in both form and content and as an animator you need to keep developing and innovating with materials, styles, ideas and narratives. This course is designed to help you do this. Not only will you try out different animation techniques and genres but you will explore inspirational styles and approaches inspired by cutting edge animations, contemporary art, graphics, illustration, sculpture and graphic novels.

About this course

Problem solve using different approaches to animation via the projects set
• Work with a variety of sources and techniques to make more innovative individual animations.
• Consider cross-disciplinary design and art practices in furthering your creative options
• Critically appraise your output and begin to define future areas of interest
• Understand the wide approach to animation in the work of contemporary animation practitioners.

Our high definition cameras and the latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.).

Course programme

- Drawn animation and experimental mark making
- Animated Graphics: meaning and message
- Illustration styles for animation : inspiration and innovation
- Graphic novels, comics and animation styles : beyond Manga
- Model making: forming new worlds.

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. You will be expected to do some work outside the class in preparation for your workshops. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Animation, Cartooning, Digital arts, Film, Graphics, Illustration, Photography and Web design.

Additional information

You can further develop your skills and interest in Animation through a range of courses at the City Lit in animation, cartooning, illustration, graphic design and digital film and editing courses. You can also enhance your work through a range of sound design courses at City Lit.
