Buying and merchandising are specialist retail functions, which lie at the heart of a fashion brand’s ability to respond effectively to fast changing fashion trends. You will gain the insights and practical knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a fashion buying or merchandising career. Industry knowledge and skills are embedded across modules and are achieved in different ways. These include learning about textiles and clothing manufacture, competitor shopping and analysing trends and sales patterns to make commercial decisions. You will develop and strengthen many skills including numeracy for buying and merchandising, presentation, team working and negotiation. Why should I choose this programme? About this course
Study methods You will be taught by staff with academic and industry experience of fashion buying and merchandising. This programme consists of: Lectures, seminars and tutorials Guest speakers in class and at larger University events External visits (e.g. to a buying office and manufacturer or wholesaler) IT seminars and workshops (e.g. Excel / Adobe Suite) Problem solving and negotiation workshops Progress tutorials Presentations Group work and self-directed study In-class formative assessments Summative (graded) assessments There is a gradual move towards more self-directed and independent learning in the final stages of the programme, particularly in the final team project.</p> Assessment structure You will be assessed through a mix of individual and group assessment, including: essay, report, presentation, team negotiation, and written reflection.</p>
