Course programme

Make-up: You will develop your skills across an impressive range of make-up techniques encompassing media, fashion and photographic make-up.

This will include:

  • camouflage make-up
  • airbrush make-up
  • styling and fitting head and facial postiche (wigs and hairpieces).
  • face and body art
  • Mehndi skin decoration

You will also gain experience of instructing clients on make-up application.

Maths and English: If you do not already have GCSE A* - C in Maths and English, you will have to complete GCSE or Functional Skills in these subjects.

Work experience: As well as working in the College¿s own hairdressing salon, you will be required to undertake a period of work experience.


You need to have a Level 2 qualification in Beauty Therapy or Make-up and a Level 1 qualification in English.

You should have a keen interest in beauty therapy, as well as good interpersonal skills and a good reference.

You will also be interviewed for a place on the course.


You will be assessed on the practical work that you do in the hairdressing salon, as well as through observations, online tests, assignments and oral questioning. You will also complete an ePortfolio.

As well as providing a route into employment or self-employment as a Make-up Artist, you can also pursue study and careers in other areas of the beauty industry.

Career opportunities as a make-up artist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based
  • Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios

  • Product manufacturing and training
