Fitness Instructing Level 2 Certificate LocationCranford Avenue Course Overview Apply Now The aim of this course is to prepare candidates for entry into the fitness industry working in a gym based environment. The course will enable the candidates to train to a professionally competent level enabling them to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment. The course is recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 2, therefore any candidate that successfully completes the course will be registered with REPs as a Level 2 instructor. This is important as leisure based employers recognise instructors that are registered on REPs as exercise professionals that are suitably knowledgeable and qualified to help safeguard and to promote the health and interests of the people who use their services.

Target Candidates: Students aged 16+ wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as a gym-based fitness instructor. Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights is highly recommended. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary. There is also an element of communication (discussing, reading and writing) involved and candidates should have basic skills in communication Level 2. A discussion/interview will be required prior to enrolment on the course. Course Content The course consists of 3 mandatory units: Unit 1 – Exercise and Fitness Knowledge Level 2 At the end of this unit the candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology and how it relates to exercise and fitness. Assessment: This unit is assessed by a multiple choice theory paper. Unit 2 – Health, safety and professionalism in Exercise and Fitness Instruction At the end of this unit the candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge of how to develop good customer service and the personal qualities required by the exercise industry. You will also be able to state how to respond to an emergency situation and show an awareness of health and safety in an exercise and fitness environment. Assessment: This unit is assessed by the following: Internally assessed worksheet and a Par Q Screening form. Unit 3 – Instructing Gym At the end of this unit the candidate will be able to plan and deliver safe and effective gym based exercise sessions. Assessment: This unit is assessed by the following: Internally assessed Portfolio of Evidence to include: • Risk Assessment • Par Q Screening • Session Plan • Session Evaluation • Direct observation of candidate instructing a gym session Candidates must successfully complete all 3 units to gain the full Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym) How will I be assessed? The course is intensive in order to cover all the topics and apply the knowledge to the practical gym based setting. The first two units will be delivered on the Saturday, all candidates will be required to complete workbooks and evidence they have covered the course content. Unit 3 will deliver the practical gym based element of the course and require all candidates to attend at the college gym for a week, 26-30 Oct 9am – 5pm daily. Practical workout kit will need to be worn for these sessions. The course is intensive in order to cover the many aspects involved and a series of home study exercises will be set by the tutor. On average this should take no more than 1 hour per week. As well as attendance and set home study, all candidates will be required to produce a portfolio of work that covers all the learning outcomes of this qualification. Progression After completion of this course you will be able to progress to the Award in Instructing Circuit Sessions.
