About this course

Understand the correct tools and equipment required for a florist
Know the correct conditioning methods and care for flowers and foliage
Identify cut materials and their uses
Discuss the importance of principle and elements of design and colour
Understand the different types of designs a florist can create and the uses for the designs​

This Teaching Assistant (HLTA) home study course is provided for students employed in a teaching assistant role who would like the opportunity of progressing onto Higher Level Teaching Assistant Status.

Students looking to enrol onto this course should meet the following criteria:
Have completed a Level 3 Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools course or equivalent.
Be aged 16 Years or above
Possess a solid knowledge of the english language
Have access to a PC and the internet for the duration of the whole course
Basic computer skills: e.g Word processing, emailing, uploading documents etc
Have a genuine desire to succeed
Students should be working/volunteering within a school setting to enrol on this course. Minimum 1 day per week for duration of course (Approx 1 Year)

The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards’ Quality Licence Scheme & is offered in partnership with Open Study College (OSC). This means that OSC has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet certain quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future.

The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by OFQUAL, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.

  • Principles of design and the design schema
  • Importance of special dates by identifying the most important dates that affect the florist annual calendar
UNIT 4: COSTING DESIGN AND PLANT MATERIALS
  • Costing a design and create costing sheets
  • Creating a buying and order list
  • Classify flowers
  • Classify foliage
UNIT 5: FLORAL DESIGNS PART 1- TIED DESIGNS, ARRANGEMENTS AND FUNERAL FLOWERS

UNIT 6: FLORAL DESIGNS PART 2- WEDDING, EVENT FLOWERS AND PLANTED DESIGNS

Assessment

Learners will be required to complete a series of tutor marked assignments ( normally 1 after each unit) as they progress through this course. Each assignment will contain a variety of tasks/questions. These assignments are assessed by your tutor to monitor progress. You will be provided with constructive feedback to help you in completing each unit to the required standard.

Additional information

Course duration will vary dependant on student commitment, effort and ability. Overall guided learning hours are Approx 360. Students should allow 7-10 months to complete. This should be used as a guideline only and completion times will vary hugely.
