About this course
You will normally be employed as a teaching assistant, learning support assistant, play worker or similar either in a paid or a voluntary role. You will normally have completed a level 3 qualification.

The course is designed for those who work in a range of educational support and care roles with children in early years and primary schools. It will further your learning and career development and enhance your professional skills.
About the Course
The Foundation Degree: Working With Children is normally completed over 3 years on a part-time basis. The academic year runs from October to mid-June and teaching sessions take place from 1-6pm one day each week (currently Thursday). There is no contact time during school half-terms or other holidays. The level 1 component is taught at Totton College (the first 18 months) and consists of components focused upon learning and studying in Higher Education, child development, children with special needs and other related topics. The level 2 component (the second 18 months) is taught at the University of Southampton, where students select topics from a number of options. Students must complete an action research module during their study.

What are the entry requirements?
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed by a series of assignments, essays and presentations attached to each of the 7 units (level 1). In general each unit of study attracts 2 assignments. There are no exams.
Are there any resources to obtain?
There are no special requirements other than access to a computer. Text books will be available in the College Library.
Fees
No Course Fees for Under 19's. Over 19's must pay, or claim Level 2 or Level 3 Entitlement for FREE courses .
Are there any other costs?
Tuition Fees: £880.00 per annum, students may be eligible for grants/burseries from their local education authorities.
What facilities can be used on this course?
Students will require regular access to the library and the IT facilities. Students will need access to a computer at home.
What next?
Upon completion, you will have the opportunity to progress to BA (Hons) Degree Level and/or gain Qualified Teacher Status. This is therefore an attractive part-time route into teaching for many students.
