About this course

Potential students must be aged 19 or over and meet the College's minimum entry requirements for higher education courses. Candidates must also show an aptitude for computing together with evidence of an interest in digital media, visual design and new technology. Places are offered subject to a successful audition interview.

Introduction:
New Media is a term used to describe digital media that is created using computers. This can include images, sound, text, video and animation. It can be delivered to consumers over the Internet, digital TV, mobile telephones and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants, eg palmtops). New Media tools and techniques are also used to design a vast range of printed materials including magazines and newspapers.

Study Mode & Location:
This course can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis. The full time programme lasts for two years and is studied over two days per week. The part time programme lasts for three years and is also studied over two days per week. The course will be held at Preston College, Park Campus, Moor Park Avenue, Preston, PR1 6AS.

Course Content:
The course comprises the following modules:

Level 1 Modules

  • Introduction to the tools, techniques and systems used to create and deliver digital media.
  • Working with industry standard software to produce websites and interactive content for CD-ROMS.
  • Programming using Javascript.
  • Developing creative and technical solutions to real problems.
  • Historical development of new media.
  • Opportunities to be creative and to build a digital and paper-based portfolio of work.



Level 2 Modules

  • Placing skills in a professional context.
  • Developing a working profile and preparing for employment, self employment or progression to an honours degree.
  • Extending capabilities to include programming in actionscript and 3D modelling and animation.
  • Using knowledge and skills in new media design to undertake substantial assignments and produce work that meets the needs of industry-level assignment briefs.
  • Establishing a portfolio that includes a range of technical and creative work produced for 'real work' assignments. This portfolio will show an understanding of and compliance with, industry practices, which will act as a springboard to employment or further study.



Assessment:
Your work will be assessed using methods including coursework assignments, practical exercises, seminar presentations and computer-based examinations.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
This programme is designed to equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills for success in current and/or future employment, either in media organisations or through self-employment. It provides a pathway for life-long learning, offering a progression route to an Honours Degree in Web & Multimedia/Interactive Digital Media. This involves undertaking a bridging programme of two modules (delivered by the University of Central Lancashire) in the summer of your final year on the Foundation Degree.
