What is the course about?
This qualification provides you with a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector of working with young children. This is nationally recognised by employers and allows progression directly into employment or continuation on to an Honours Degree. The course is ideal for those currently working in an early years setting who wish to take on a challenge and progress, gaining a greater knowledge and understanding of children.

Entry Requirements
You should be employed within the sector, either paid or unpaid, for a minimum of one day per week (or equivalent).
There are no formal entry qualifications. However applicants should have appropriate communication and number skills and you must be prepared to learn how to use Information and Communication Technology in order to access resources and develop practical experience in the learning environment.

What will I study?
You will study a variety of modules throughout the duration of the course covering topics such as theories of development, child protection, early years curriculum, communication, continuing personal and professional development, understanding children's behaviour, developing play and pedagogic issues for early years. There will also be an element of study skills in order to assist with the transition of learning from the various levels.

Assessment Methods
Assessments for the course may take a variety of forms, from group work and presentations to formal, written assignments and reports.
Note: Assessments are based on workplace learning and will require you to have access to groups of children. There is a requirement of a minimum of 60 days work-based experience.

Fieldwork/Practical experience
Workplace based study and assessment are integral to the course

Progression Routes
On successful completion of the programme, students can progress onto University to gain a BA Honours Degree in Early Years.
