This course is an exciting, multi-disciplinary art and design programme validated by the University of the Arts London Awarding Body, which leads to an internationally recognised qualification. The course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and creative techniques to prepare you for study at degree or post-graduate level*, or to establish your professional practice as an artist, designer or maker. You will develop a large portfolio of personal work alongside a deep understanding of art and design, and will be helped to make decisions about your future within education or the creative industries. You do not need formal qualifications for entry onto the course, however we ask all applicants to bring a portfolio of creative work to interview. This course is popular with those wishing to develop or change to a career in the creative arts, those returning to education, and those wishing to explore and develop their creativity to a more advanced level.

This course explores contemporary creative practices and debates, and as such you can expect to be stimulated and challenged by some of the ideas and images discussed.

About this course

- explore, develop and realise your creative ideas and conceptual thinking through set and self-initiated projects;
- explore, develop and apply a wide range of specialist art and design skills, techniques and methods in the development of creative work;
- build a wide-ranging, high level portfolio of creative work for use in applying for further study or for opportunities in the creative industries appropriate to your personal aims and goals;
- bring together and realise your creative thinking and practice in a final major project and present your work in a professional exhibition in an external gallery space.

The majority of materials you will need in the studios at City Lit are provided without additional charge. We ask you to purchase basic materials for your independent study, such as an A4 sketch book. As the course develops you will need an A1 size portfolio case to store and present your portfolio work. Whilst we aim to provide you with the essential, basic materials necessary to develop your work you may be required to provide your own specialist materials depending on the type of work you wish to develop . You will be taught by a team of staff comprised of practising artists, designers, theorists and experienced teachers using a wide range of teaching methods, including demonstrations in our fully equipped specialist studios, expert tuition from leading practitioners, tutor-led discussions, group work and practical exercises, practical workshops, individual research projects and studio-based creative assignments. There are also a range of critical studies lectures, seminars and workshops, and museum and gallery visits. All students will be expected to work approximately a day a week on independent study and there is individual learning support available for those with specific learning difficulties.

Course programme

During the first term you will participate in a programme of workshops in the specialist practices of drawing and painting, sculpture, printmaking, animation and film-making, graphics and illustration, ceramics, and creative textiles. These workshops run alongside a core programme in personal project development, drawing, photography, colour theory, creative thinking, contextual studies and research. You will develop your creative skills through visits to galleries and museums, creative projects and practical experimentation and exploration. At the end of the term you will choose two specialist areas that will become the focus of your study in the following terms. Term 2 starts in April. Attendance is for 3 days per week: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays or Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

During the second term two days per week are spent in your specialist areas, learning skills and developing project work. A third day in core studies will include workshops in drawing and conceptual development, critical studies workshops, talks from visiting practitioners, project development, workshops personal statements and applications. At this stage you will start to initiate personal projects and further establish your personal creative language. Study days for this term vary depending on your choice of specialist area.

The final term is your opportunity to bring together everything you have learned and fully realise your own creative vision through a final major project. This project starts with a proposal devised by you to reflect your interests and passions, and bring together the specialist skills and knowledge you will have developed. You will work in your specialist and core areas to realise your ideas, research and explore creatively and experiment in the process of project development. At the end of the term you will plan and present your creative work in a professional group exhibition in an external gallery.

Additional information

The majority of our students go on to study at university at undergraduate or - in some cases - post-graduate level, or progress onto advanced level courses within City Lit. Alternatively, our students often take up work in a field related to art and design. In the past our students have gained employment in galleries, established their own studios, set up small businesses, participated in artist residencies, and shown and sold work in exhibitions and events nationally and internationally. During the programme we offer advice and support with applications and guidance on possible progression routes. In recent years all students who apply to Higher Education have been offered places on completion of the Foundation course, but progression is not automatic as the level of course you may successfully apply for depends on a range of factors including your experience, prior qualifications and the level and standard of your portfolio.
