Access To Music L1: Performing Musician Diploma
This one-year course is aimed at beginner level musicians and singers who are interested in a career in the music industry. The focus of the course is performance within a Rock and Pop band, therefore it is aimed at students who play guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, and singers. (Trumpet, trombones and saxophones can also be accommodated). The course aims to build confidence in performing and working within a group, and to develop musical knowledge and skills, and awareness of the music industry in general. Students will perform in various musical styles, including blues and rock. There will be a number of public performances throughout the year in various local venues. It is anticipated that most applicants will be self-taught musicians who play by ear and may not have taken any grade examinations. The ability to read and write music will therefore be taught from scratch.

  • Composing Music
  • Popular Music Theory (LCM Syllabus) and Rockschool Instrumental and Vocal grade examinations are incorporated into this course. Examinations take place in June each year. All students will study a first and second instrument (instrument includes voice), one of which must be a piano or a guitar. The second instrument may be at total beginner level. Much of the classwork is practical-based, although there will be a small amount of written work. Learning support is available where appropriate. Students will require the following for this course:
    • First and second study drummers
    • : 2 pairs of sticks and a metronome
    • First study guitar players
    • : own guitar, 2 jack leads, tuner and a metronome
    • First study bass guitarists
    • : own bass guitar, 2 jack leads, tuner and a metronome
    • First study keyboardists
    • : 2 jack leads and a metronome
    • First study vocalists
    • : own quality microphone (e.g. Sure SM58 or equivalent), an XLR lead, metronome, a Dictaphone would be helpful

      Key Skills:
      Key Skill Communication Level 1 (or Basic Skill Communication) will be incorporated into this course.

      Work Experience / Practical Experience:
      The course is practical / vocational and therefore does not include work experience placements

      Attendance Requirements:
      Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

      Entry Requirements:
      There are no formal qualifications necessary, however, one main instrument at beginner Grade 3 level, and a willingness to learn a second instrument. A positive attitude towards learning, and commitment to individual practice is essential.

      Entry Process:
      All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

      Assessment:
      Assessment is through continuous coursework (including practical and written).

      Progression Routes:
      Level 2/3 Performing Musician courses.

      Career Options:
      Progression to Level 2/3/4. Potential live band work/song-writing.
