Course content
AS: Year 1
Unit 1: This introductory unit focuses on the practical and written exploration of two contemporary plays and different approaches to creating theatre, as well as an evaluation of live theatre.
Unit 2: Students will take an acting (or design) role in the performance of a play chosen to suit the group and perform a dialogue from any other play.
A2: Year 2
Unit 3: Students will devise their own original performances about a subject of their own choice.
Unit 4: The final unit focuses on the study of a historically significant play such as Dr. Faustus by Marlowe or one of Shakespeares. Students will develop their own ideas for a production of the former and explore the original performance conditions of the latter, through a visit to the Globe Theatre, as well as reviewing a contemporary performance.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Assessment includes: practical and written coursework; practical exams and a final written exam, in which students will be able to take in their own preparatory notes. The emphasis in lessons will be on practical work, but you will also need to be prepared to develop extended written responses.
What Could I Do Next?
Drama is a well established A Level subject, which is excellent preparation for those wishing to pursue their interest or ambition at university or drama school, or for anyone who intends to progress to any other degree course.
In recent years students have progressed to professional fame, drama school and leading roles with the National Youth Theatre, as well as university drama degrees and acting in Stables (and other local theatre) productions.
Are There Any Special Expenses?
Theatre trips will be arranged each term as part of the course. Student budgets and enthusiasms will influence choices, which will usually cost between 5.00 and 35.00.
