What will I be learning?

You will study the National Diploma in Sports Studies or Sports Science. Subjects include: the body in action, fitness testing, nutrition, psychology, massage & injuries, training & fitness and coaching. Academy students will receive regular coaching and will be involved in regular matches and competitions at a high standard.
The course will also allow you to undertake a combination of additional, nationally recognised sports qualifications. These will include the following:
Community Sports Leader
National Pool Lifeguard
Exercise and Fitness qualifications
Gym Instruction
First Aid at Work/Emergency First Aid
Literacy and Working with Others level 2 Key skills.

How will I learn?

This exciting new programme is a blend of practical Basketball, and academic study, combining both to benefit you as an athlete, and enhance your future opportunities in higher education or in the workplace. The National Diploma is assessed by a range of methods including assignments, reports, presentations and practical observations. Assessment is continuous throughout the two years. Lessons are both practical and theoretical and you will also have the opportunity to undertake additional vocational qualifications over your two years, including coaching qualifications. Wherever possible the National Diploma units will be applied to the sport of Basketball, and you can use your practical and coaching ability to enhance your grades in some modules.

What else might I want to know?

Academy students will represent the College in local, regional and national competitions, and may still represent their own clubs in all competitions. At interview we will advise you of any essential resources, training kit or equipment that you may need as part of your course.
The programme is designed to help you improve your performance through regular coaching and matches, whilst at the same time gaining the National Diploma in Sport at South Devon College. You will also receive physiotherapy support and strength and conditioning training.

What can I do afterwards?

Previous students on our sports academy programmes have gone on to take up places at both Loughborough and Exeter Universities, whilst many others are now working within the sports industry of their choice as professional coaches.
