BHS Horsecare Knowledge and Riding NVQ 2Duration

You will be expected to be available to attend college for a minimum of 3 days per week plus a half day work experience

Course Description
The course is suitable for those who have achieved Level 1 in Horse Care and are working towards level 2 or have substantial relevant industry experience. It will provide you with the skills and vocational qualifications so that you can work in a number of fields within the equine related industry. You should be able to ride in balance at all paces with and without stirrups. If you are choosing the jumping unit you must be able to jump a variety of small fences on a variety of horses. You will be required to take an initial assessment in your riding ability. You will also be required to attend key skills sessions up to level 2 after an initial assessment. You must commit to 100% attendance.

Course Structure
Mandatory Units
  • Prepare and clean stables
  • Maintain the health and well being of horses
  • Prepare horses for use
  • Prepare and maintain horses on grazing land
  • Prepare and provide non-ridden exercise and aftercare
  • Load and unload horses under supervision
  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Maintain effective working relationships


Additional Units
  • Exercise horses under supervision (non-jumping elements)
  • School horses under supervision (jumping elements)
  • Assist with Riders with Special Needs


Course Assessment
This is a portfolio based assessment qualification. Assessments will be made on practical ability and knowledge and understanding of set criteria. The course is Internally Verified and Externally Verified by the British Horse Society. Completion of all mandatory units and 1 additional unit is required to receive the full qualification.

Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

A uniform is required for this course.

Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning.

These activities are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.

Course Progression
You may progress to higher level qualifications such as:
  • BHS Preliminary Teaching Test
  • BHS Level 3 in Horse Care Knowledge and Riding
  • BTEC Level 3 in Horse Management
