BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in Care

Why should I study BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in Care?
A BTEC National Certificate provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in health and social care sectors. It is broadly equivalent to two GCEs.

This course will provide learners with sufficient knowledge and understanding of health and social care to enable them to progress to:

  • Higher Education
  • directly into employment


What will be studied on the course?
Learners will study 12 units (8 core units plus specialist units).

The 8 core units are:

Unit 1: Developing Effective Communication in Health & Social Care
Unit 2: Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care
Unit 3: Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care
Unit 4: Development through the Life Stages
Unit 5: Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology for Health & Social Care
Unit 6: Personal & Professional Development in Health & Social Care
Unit 7: Sociological Perspectives for Health & Social Care
Unit 8: Psychological Perspectives for Health & Social Care

The timetable will also include Key Skills and First Aid.

When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts in September and lasts for two academic years ending in June.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?

  • A minimum of 4 GCSE's at grade C or above (which must include English and Maths or Science)
  • A Merit at GNVQ Intermediate Health & Social Care (including Key Skills)

**This course requires you to attend vocational placements. Examples of placements include residential care of the elderly, primary schools and hospitals.

How will the learner be assessed?
You will complete assignments and projects relating to vocational practice and the National Occupational Standards in Health & Social Care.

How much will the course cost?
You may decide to purchase textbooks relating to Health and Social Care. However, books are available for loan from our Learning Resource Centre. You may be asked to cover the cost of transport for any visits arranged throughout the course. If you leave the course you will be expected to pay the awarding body's registration fee
