About this course

You will need an interview and a keen interest in fashion plus one of the following:
GCSE Grade A*-C in art or a design subject (Textiles or Fashion) plus 3 GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language
First Diploma (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject at Merit

Course Description
This two year course provides you with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills to pursue a career in a broad range of areas in the fashion and textiles industry. You will be encouraged to look at the ethical issues in the fashion and clothing industry which are currently at the forefront in the fashion industry. The BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design (Fashion and Clothing) extends the knowledge of fashion design within the creative field. The qualification will build and develop the necessary skills, techniques and attitudes to begin a successful professional career or move on to further study. It will give an understanding of the employment opportunities available in fashion and design so that you can progress into a specific area of work.

The course structure can allow the qualification to be flexible to meet learners interests, abilities and aspirations. There are five compulsory core units plus a choice of units from a range of fashion and clothing specialist areas.

Course Content
The essential elements of the course give you a comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of art and design - techniques and materials, concepts and influences, visual recording and communication. The specific focus is within fashion and clothing; you can choose to specialise in the area that you are most talented and interested in, such as womenswear, menswear, costume design and constructed textiles for fashion.

Additional Qualifications During the course you will have the opportunity to study two additional Courses, in the first year a BTEC Award in Visual Arts* which includes Print-Making and in the second year a BTEC Award in Textiles. The purpose of additional courses is to provide you with further skills in Art and Fashion, and also supplementary material for your portfolio for Higher Edcuation. (*subject to change)

Course Length and Study Pattern
The course consists of 18 units.

9 Units are studied in the 1st year and a further 9 are studied in the second year.

· Core Units

Drawing and Visual Recording, Developing Ideas and Concepts, Historical and Contextual Inï¬â€Suences, Materials, Techniques and Processes.

· Specialist Fashion Units

Developing Costume Design, Fashion Media Techniques and Technology, Fashion Presentation Techniques, Fashion Visualisation, Garment/Accessory Production, Knitted Textiles, Pattern Construction, Pattern Development, Printed Textiles, Production Techniques and Surface Pattern.

· Fashion Photography

Lens Based Image Making, Photographic Studio Techniques and Image Manipulation Computer Applications.

Key Skills

The course also includes Key Skills in Numeracy in the first year and Communication (integrated into Art History Assignments) in the second year. Depending on your GCSE results you may have to take a test in either or both Communication and Numeracy.

GCSE Retakes

There is also the option of retaking either GCSE Maths or English in the first year of this course.

Higher Education: BA Degree, Foundation Degree, HNC/Ds within the creative disciplines.

Work Experience
Work experience is not a compulsory part of the course but if it is essential for an application to an HE course or employment it can be arranged by either yourself or your course team leader.

Assessment
You will be assessed through coursework and written assignments. Assessment is carried out continuously throughout the first year, at the end of which you will be graded for the first 9 units. In the second year you will be assessed in a further 9 units, 1 of these units is the final major project which is assessed through the end of year fashion show. At the end of year two you will receive three final grades for the 18 unit qualification plus your UCAS point score. It is possible depending on your grades that you can achieve a maximum of 360 UCAS point for a higher education application.

Trips and Enrichment Activities
There are regular day trips and an option of a residential trip to London in the first and second year.
