Attendance
You are expected to be available to attend

College for 3 days a week 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Course description
The aim of the course is to help provide candidates with a basic knowledge and understanding of the key areas in caring for children.

Course Structure
The programme consists of 7 units. Each unit carries a portfolio task and an assignment. There is also a final multiple choice question paper at the end of the year.

Units to be studied include:

• Personal development
• Human growth and development from birth to old Age
• Food and nutrition
• Health and safety practices in home and group settings
• Care of Children
• Play and Practical Activities
• Orientation to Work Programme
• Placement.

Basic skills in Numeracy and Literacy are an integral part of the course.

Course Assessment
These assignments have hand in dates set by the exam board which must be strictly adhered to.

Course Entry requirements

• 2 GCSE grades Ds and above including English
• Cache Certificate in Preparation for childcare Entry Level at Distinction
• For equivalent qualifications see the Entry Requirements Explained page
• All applicants must complete an initial assessment in Maths and English and attend an interview
• Two references must be provided. Application of CRB and Uniform must be applied for.

Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

There will be fees for CRB of £36.00 and uniform costs of approx. £20.00.

Course Enrichment
Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.

You will have the opportunity to gain hands on experience with electronic babies and take part in a work placement.

• Level 2 Diploma in Childcare
• NVQ Level 2 CCLD

Course Career Prospects
This qualification does not qualify learners to practice in the workplace, however after further study you can progress into careers with children such as Nursery/Playgroup Assistant, Nanny, Play Worker and Teaching Assistant.
