Course Description:
The aim of this coures is to prepare students to work in a wide range of child care settings and to prepare students for entry into Higher Education accessing a range of childcare and education courses.

The programme is taught through nine mandatory units entitled:

• An Introduction to Working with Children
• Development from Conception to 16 Years
• Supporting Children
• Keeping Children Safe
• The Principles Underpinning the Role of the Practitioner Working with Children
• Promoting a Healthy Environment for Children
• Play and Learning in Children's Education
• Caring for Children
• Development of Professional Skills within Children's Education.

There are also three taught optional units.

Entry Requirements:
Those wishing to progress to teacher training or nurse training must also have Mathematics and Science at GCSE C grade or above.

GNVQ Intermediate or CCE or BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care at Distinction grade for ALL units.

Assessment and Progression:
Continuous assessment in college and on placement. In addition there are external assessment tests at the end of the award and certificate stages plus a research task towards the end of the Diploma stage.

If you are aged under 19 on 31st August when your programme begins you are entitled to free tuition, provided you are a European Union national. Mature students may, in certain circumstances, also qualify for help toward the cost of fees.
