Full Time Diploma in Land-based Studies
Course Description:
The course is an introductory course to equestrian qualifications and contributes towards the underpinning knowledge of the NVQ in Horsecare Level 1. It will give you a good foundation for progression onto NVQ in Horsecare Level 1.
The course will introduce you to the care of animals, horses in particular, and will also develop your horse riding skills.
You will learn in a group of up to 10 students and will have lots of practical work with demonstrations and lectures. To become good at what you do, practice is essential therefore, you will participate in daily yard skill sessions where you will be caring for the horses, mucking out, tiding the yard etc. This work will be supervised by the college staff and you will be given advice and help on how to improve your work skills.

Assessment and Progression:
Your practical work will be assessed regularly throughout the course and the results recorded in your portfolio. You will also complete some multiple choice questions in some subject areas. The core subjects are externally examined by a multiple choice question paper.
You will always know how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve your work.
Note: Key Skills Communications are embedded into this qualification maximising employability and career opportunities.
Students usually progress to NVQ in Horse Care Level 1, but may progress to employment in the horse industry.
Duration:
Full-time students (21.5 hours per week/3 days per week) between September and December.
Part-time students (7.25 hours per week/1 day per week) plus block days, will complete within one academic year.
